Glass Types
Laminated Glass
- Laminated glass consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together by an interlayer. At Precision Glassworks, we provide toughened laminated glass, which involves two pieces of toughened glass laminated together. We use a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer, at least 1.52mm thick, which offers a significant barrier to penetration. When broken, the glass pieces are held together by the interlayer, and if adequately supported, the glass is more likely to stay in place. Typically, if laminated glass is used in your balustrade, a handrail is not necessary, although including one can significantly enhance the balustrade's structural integrity. Laminated glass generally costs more than toughened glass.
Toughened Glass
- Toughened glass undergoes a heat treatment process after being shaped. The glass is heated to around 700 degrees Celsius and then quickly cooled. If broken, toughened glass shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces and will not support a load anymore.
For balustrades using toughened glass, if they protect against a fall of 600mm or more, a handrail is required.
